Young George, A Truly Neighborhood Gem in Fremantle

A local gem of Fremantle, Young George is situated just off the Canning Hwy and is a mix of a bottle shop and a wine bar. The wine bar is situated inside the old existing Fremantle terrace house with exposed bricks, and low ceiling, while the restaurant is located in the modern part of the Victorian building. The restaurant features a great extension at the back of the room, which offers a great contrast in between each style. We can see it from the flooring, which is kept as a timber flooring in the original part of the building and polished concrete through the extension. 

So with the 3 different interior styles of Modern Victorian, clean & straight and exposed terrace brick house blended nicely, the seating layout is also separated into three sections; free standing dining seating, bar seating, and the comfy one-side booth seats. The space gives an illusion of cosiness from the outside, but it is actually very spacious on the inside.

The fit out is rustic, black and industrial with exposed brick walls in contrast with clean, straight forward lines, creating a visually appealing contrast of old and new. The colour scheme is kept within raw timber wood, black and white tones (for the wall); which highlight the original building. They also used multiple designs for the chairs to give a more industrial feel, however they keep the colours in black to keep it clean and refined. They’ve also added multiple plants in situ which softens the room on the eye.

Part of the restaurant and its kitchen are located at the back side of the premises, with a high angled white ceiling, featuring an open kitchen and an open oven for their wood fire pizza. It also creates an open, homey and honest feel as the patrons can see how the chefs prepare our food. 

We came in for an early Sunday dinner and found the place to be a tad quiet. Our host explained the story of the foods and suggested what’s best to satisfy our tastes. He also explained that the menu is seasonal to keep it locally produced and that it is designed to be shared. We ended up ordering duck prosciutto from their house made charcuterie, soft shell crab bao with hot sauce, avocado, pickled cucumber and the special of the day menu, wood roasted pork and trimmings. 

Food wise, the duck prosciutto is the one to die for. Thinly sliced, this homemade prosciutto is served with house mustard, cornichons (aka pickled cucumbers) and a typical North American pickled relish which is called chow-chow. 

The wood roasted pork was a highlight as well. The crackling was divine, and the servings generous! 

Coming in on your own, a romantic date, meeting up in a small group or big group or to simply admire the beautiful contrast design of the restaurant, Young George is a great place to head to. The space gives flexibility to the number of patrons. It is a truly is a Fremantle treasure with a twist, that fits in perfectly with the suburb.
